Gävle Municipality


Gävle is a beautiful and inviting city and there is a lot to discover and experience between lectures and studying such as sports, culture, nature and lots of different events. Below, Marie-Louise Andersen from Gävle municipality, gives you advice on things that you can do in Gävle. 

Things for new students to discover in Gävle
-Welcome to Gävle. There is a lot you can do here on your leisure time. I will give some tips on what to do and you can find even more on our website, www.gavle.se .

Fjärran Höjder, swimming facility   
Swim around calm oasis or for exercise in the pool. There is a modern gym, solarium and spa service. During the summer it is also possible to swim outside. There are student discounts and it is open every day.

The city library – Gävle’s biggest venue
Over half a billion people visits our library every year. Here you can barrow books, magazines, DVDs, sit at the internet café or just study. There are also different activities that can range from lectures to poetry. There is a popular café with view over Gävle’s stream and on the website you can barrow and reserve books, download music and much more. Gävle library is open every day and has ten branch libraries in different neighbourhoods in Gävle.

Trendy music library
In the concert hall presides a popular music library. You’ll need a library card to barrow one of the 15 000 CDs that are available. There are also movies, notes and play station games, and on the website you can download music among other things.

Gävle – a sport region
There are a lot of teams in Gävle that plays in Sweden’s first league in there particular sport. In the winter you can watch Brynäs play hockey in there new arena and in the summer you can follow Gefle IF play soccer on Strömvallen near campus. In Sandviken they play bandy and in Ockelbo you can watch basketball.
   
Theatre
Gävle Theatre has a wide selection of plays in many exiting forms, as well as dance and circus. You can among other things enjoy theatre in our unique industrial surroundings Gasklockorna, and Scottes music theatre gives many performances for both kids and youths.
 
Number 7
Number 7 is a movie venture where they show movies that otherwise wouldn’t have been shown in Gävle. The movies are shown in the smallest movie theatre down town, namely, number 7

Jail, train and history?
In Gävle lies Sweden’s rain road museum and the jail museum. The local museum shows the regional history but also have a lot of art exhibits. It is also the place for Gävle’s best store if you want to get typical Gävle things.


Gävle concert hall and symphony orchestra
A house full of music. Here it’s possible to attend concerts from known Swedish and international bands as well as more unknown bands and artists. The concert hall is also the home for Gävle symphony orchestra and where the music library is.

Kulturkiosken
Kulturkiosken is a scene, gallery and work shop for experimental culture.

Modern art
At Gävle art centre they exhibit art from national and international artists. The art centre lies next to the university and share room with the university program design and wood technique. Café Spegeln is a great place to have a coffee. Fee entrance

Kungsberget alpine facility
45 minutes from Gävle lays one of the central Sweden’s best alpine facilities for all your downhill needs.

Skies and skates
At Läkerol Arena you can go skate every Saturday in august though to December. There are several artificially frozen and natural frozen rinks open for the public. On Storsjön between Forsbacka and Sandviken one can skate 7,4 kilometres on a track that starts at Laduholmens bay in Forskbacka.
Hemlingby´s open air activity area has many good jogging tracks, which in the winter becomes ski tracks.

Canoe
It is possible to paddle canoe in Gävle. One possible route is between Forsbacka and the Bolonger forest

Limön – Gävles archipelago island
Limö is an old fish camp and today there are summerhouses there and beautiful spots enviting you to take a swim, natural paths and barbecue possibilities. During the summer there is a boat that will get you there in 40 minutes.

Go fishing
Not all cities can offer salmon fishing in the middle of town. And it’s free. In the fishing cabin by Gävle stream everyone can barrow fish pools and the personnel will give you advice.

Enjoy nature
Gästrikeleden is a walking path that stretches all around our Gävle. There are different maps available for free. It obviously possible to use these and other natural paths to make beautiful daytrips or have a pick nick.
